The Opal can have a variety of background colours:
whitish, light grey, greenish, blue, smoke grey, black, yellowish, orange and redish.
The most well known is the white Opal, known as the noble white Opal, which displays magnificent rainbow like iridescent flares. The most beautiful examples have the translucency of amber and are almost pink in colour.
There are other highly prized varieties like the precious black Opal or the fire Opal.
The most important deposits are found in Australia, followed by Brazil, Guatemala, Honduras, USA and Indonesia.
